Togean Island Resort: Why I Built Reconnect in Indonesia

A Togean Island Resort Built Away From Mass Tourism

If you’re searching for a Togean Island resort, you’re probably not looking for crowds or overbuilt coastlines. That’s exactly why I built Reconnect.

The island sits about 20 minutes by speedboat from Ampana, around 15 km from the mainland. It’s easy enough to reach, but once you arrive, it feels like you’ve stepped out of everything. This part of Indonesia is still raw. No beach clubs. No traffic. No heavy development creeping in from every direction.

Reconnect is located right at the entrance of the Togean National Park. From here, you can explore the whole region, then come back to a place that stays quiet.

Why I Built Reconnect (And Who I Am)

My name is Thomas Despin, and I’m the founder of Reconnect.

Before this, I spent about three years living in Bali. In the beginning, it felt like paradise. Over time, it changed. More people, more construction, less of what made it special.

At the same time, I had just exited an e-commerce business and wanted to build something tangible. Something that didn’t exist behind a screen. So I came to Sulawesi with a simple idea in mind: create a place where I would actually want to live. That came first. The resort came after.

I never wanted to build something based on volume. That model is everywhere, and it always leads to the same result. Places get popular, then crowded, then slowly lose what made them worth visiting. I wanted to try something else.

Keep capacity limited. Stay close to nature. Build something that can hold its value over time instead of burning out. It’s not perfect. It’s still evolving. But the direction is clear.

Building a Remote Island Resort in Indonesia

Running a remote island resort in Indonesia is very different from running a hotel in a city or even in Bali.

There’s no infrastructure waiting for you. No grid. No easy backup when something fails. So we had to build our own systems from the ground up.

We run on a solar setup of around 40 kWp.
Fresh water is produced on the island at about 500 liters per hour using desalination.
The team is made up of 20 people, all from the local area.

The idea is simple. Rely less on external systems and make the island as self-sufficient as possible. Not because it sounds good, but because it’s the only way this kind of place can function long term.

Sustainability here isn’t something you achieve once. It’s something you keep working toward.

Who This Place Is For

Reconnect isn’t for everyone, and that’s intentional. Roughly half of our guests are divers or doing their first certification. The rest are a mix of couples, families, and people who just want to step away from everything for a while.

There’s no nightlife here. No schedule you have to follow. No pressure to fill your day. It’s a place where you can slow down without feeling like you’re missing out on something.

At certain times of the year, the whole island can also be privatized for small groups, retreats, or weddings.

What Luxury Means to Me

For me, luxury has nothing to do with excess.

It’s about having space around you.
It’s about quiet mornings without noise in the background.
It’s about not being constantly pulled in different directions.

That’s what I wanted to create here.
A place where things feel simple again, without giving up comfort.
